How to connect X to Rollout

Very plain steps for non-technical artists: buy credits on X, create a free app, copy four codes, paste them into Rollout. About 20¢ per post when it includes a SoundCloud link.

This guide walks you through connecting your own X account (the one formerly called Twitter — the one fans follow) so Rollout can post release announcements for you.

Rollout does not post from a company X account, and Rollout does not pay X for you. You use your account, and you pay X for the small per-post fees.

Use a computer and a web browser for this (not only the phone app). About 20–30 minutes the first time. After that, connecting again is just pasting codes.

Stop and read: the money part

X is not free for auto-posting. You will:

  1. Create a free “developer app” (that part costs $0).
  2. Put money on your X developer account (called credits or billing).
  3. Every time Rollout posts for you, X takes a little of that money.

If you are not willing to put a few dollars of credit on X, skip X and use Facebook / Instagram / Discord instead.

What you need before you start

Part A — Sign up for the X developer site

  1. On your computer, open this site: https://developer.x.com
  2. Click Sign in (or Developer Portal / Console if you see that). Use the same X login as your music account.
  3. If X asks you to join the developer platform or agree to terms, say yes. Read enough to be comfortable; you are only posting to your own account.
  4. If X asks what you will use this for (a short description), paste something simple like:
    I schedule my own music release announcements from my own tool. Posts go only to my own X account with my track title, cover art, and SoundCloud link.
  5. If X asks whether you will make posts for other people or sell access: choose no — this is only for you.
  6. Finish any email confirmation if they send one, then go back until you land in a Dashboard or Developer Console home screen.

Part B — Put money on your X developer account (do this before testing)

Without credit, every post will fail. Do this early so you are not stuck later.

  1. In the developer site, look for a menu item named something like Billing, Credits, Pay-per-use, Usage, or Account → billing. (X renames menus sometimes — look for money / credits.)
  2. Add funds or buy credits. Start small if you want — enough for a few test posts (for example a few dollars).
  3. Confirm the balance shows credits available (not zero).
  4. If you cannot find billing: stay signed in, open the help search on developer.x.com for “credits” or “billing”, or check any banner that says pay-per-use / add payment method.

Remember: topping up is on X’s site, not inside Rollout.

Part C — Create a Project and an App (free)

  1. From the developer home, create a Project if X asks for one. Name it anything, e.g. My Music.
  2. Inside that project, create an App. Name it anything, e.g. My Music Posts. Free.
  3. Open that app when it is created. You should see sections for settings, keys, and tokens.

Part D — Allow the app to post (Read and Write)

If this step is wrong, posts will fail even with money on the account.

  1. In your app, find permissions. Look for labels like:
    • App permissions, or
    • User authentication settings, or
    • OAuth / Read and write
  2. Set permission to Read and Write (not “Read only”).
  3. Save / confirm. Wait until the page says it saved.
  4. If X asks for a website or callback URL for login, you can use your band site or https://soundcloudrollout.com if a field is required — you are still only posting as yourself with the keys you paste next.

Part E — Create the four secret codes

You need four long codes. Think of them as four remote-control batteries that only work together.

  1. Open the app page called Keys and tokens (or Keys).
  2. Find API Key and API Secret (X may also say Consumer Key and Consumer Secret).
    • Copy API Key into your notepad. Label it “API Key”.
    • Click Show on the secret, copy API Secret, label it “API Secret”.
  3. On the same page, find Access Token and Access Token Secret.
    • If they do not exist yet, click Generate / Create.
    • Important: generate (or Regenerate) these after you set Read and Write. If you made them while the app was still Read only, regenerate them now.
    • Copy both. Label them “Access Token” and “Access Token Secret”.
  4. Do not share these codes. Anyone with all four can post as you.

Part F — Paste into Rollout and test

  1. Open Rollout and sign in.
  2. Click Social in the top navigation.
  3. Click ⚙ Connections.
  4. Under Choose your networks, tap X so it is selected (orange / on).
  5. In the X section below, you will see four boxes (and an optional handle box):
    • API Key — paste the first code
    • API Secret — paste the second code
    • Access Token — paste the third code
    • Access Token Secret — paste the fourth code
    • Your @handle (optional) — e.g. myband without the @ if you want a clearer label
  6. Click the orange Connect X button.
  7. When it says connected, click Send test post.
  8. Open your X profile (or “Posts”) and check that the test appeared.

If the test works, you can schedule real release posts. Each post with a SoundCloud link will spend roughly 20¢ of your X credits.
